Before you start reading this blog, make sure you check out what is period acne and how your hormones play a role in it in Edition 1

Period acne can be stubborn and keeps on coming back. Here are a few things that you can do and keep the hormonal breakouts from coming back by preparing for your next cycle.

  • Prepare for your next menstrual cycle:

You can use benzoyl peroxide products to decrease the strength of active acne. Keep your pores clean by using a deep pore gel-based cleanser preferably containing aloe vera. Another way to keep pores clean is by using Salicylic acid products to prevent breakouts. When using an OTC product, always start with a lower strength to avoid any skin irritation.

  • Diet

Your diet plays a big role in menstruation and overall health. Keep your blood sugar levels low by eating foods with a low glycemic index (GI). Even if the cravings strike, stay away from:

  • Sugary foods and drinks
  • Refined Grains
  • Highly processed foods

These foods can increase inflammation and lead to an acne flare-up during your period. Instead, start eating foods that are rich in anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory. A wholefoods balanced diet that includes fresh fruits, vegetables, grass-fed meat, eggs, healthy fats, fish, nuts, seeds, whole grains is the best for maintaining good menstrual health. Acne flare-ups are often triggered when you are eating a lot of processed food made with refined flour and sugar. You should also avoid fast food, trans fats, and MSG. Drink plenty of water to clear out the toxins from your body.

  • How to balance hormones to prevent period acne?

Some of the common causes of hormonal imbalance are nutritional deficiencies and stress. By reducing stress hormones like cortisol, you will be able to balance your hormone levels. Consider taking adaptogens to balance hormones like Ashwagandha, Tulsi, etc. Consult with your doctor before taking any adaptogenic herb. Get enough sleep daily of at least 8 hours to balance hormones naturally.

By taking these proactive steps, you will be better prepared for your next menstrual cycle and prevent a hormonal acne breakout.
