Monsoons bring up respite from hot summer days, but with increased humidity levels, the incidence of vaginal infections becomes more common during rainy days. The sudden temperature fluctuations during monsoons lower our immunity and make us more susceptible to diseases like urinary tract infections, vaginitis, yeast infections, etc. Vaginal discomfort, itching and irritation, pain during peeing, thick vaginal discharge, and frequent urination are some of the common symptoms of the different vaginal infections.

Vaginal infections can be deeply distressing and cause inconvenience and pain. The increased moisture levels promote the growth of bacteria, fungi, and yeast in monsoons. However, by maintaining good personal hygiene, you can guard yourself against these vaginal infections.

Change sanitary napkin/tampon frequently

During periods make sure you change the sanitary napkin every 4 hours and do not use scented sanitary products, especially if you are more prone to infections. A damp napkin promotes bacterial growth as microorganisms multiply quickly in moist and warm conditions.

Wear cotton panties

Synthetic underwear causes increased sweating and skin chafing in the vaginal area. Wear cotton panties as it will soak the sweat and keep you dry. It is a breathable fabric and will keep your airy down there. Also wear loose cotton clothes instead of tight fitted jeans, etc. to avoid sweating.

Wipe front to back

You should always use the tissue to clean yourself from front to back after using the toilet. Wiping from back to front may bring germs from the anus to the vagina. So be careful while cleaning yourself.

Clean your vagina after intercourse

Using the toilet after sex will help wash out all the bacteria from the vagina that may have ventured in during intercourse, so get into the habit of peeing after sex. It’s best to wash the vagina if you are more sensitive to vaginal infection.

Use condoms

Always use protection during sex to guard yourself against diseases. Bacteria inhabit on the skin around genitals can get in the vagina during sex. Condoms can provide some protection against these. Sometimes, though not usually bacterial infections are caused by sexually transmitted diseases, so using a condom always helps. Besides, using condom be monogamous and avoid having multiple partners to protect yourself from vaginal infections.

Clean the vagina Keep the vagina clean and dry but do not overdo it. The vagina is a self-cleaning organ, so do not use soaps as it can disturb the pH balance and cause irritation, wash with water.
